“There's no doubting The Grand's gastronomic heart; two of the owners are Italian/Australian chefs. Nor is there any question over the real hospitality, which explains a tight reservations diary. Add good prices and service to understand why diners line up for dishes like the prosciutto-wrapped confit rabbit with panzanella, roasted pigeon with a veal/pork farce and Reggiano risotto, or even a simple char-grilled baby calamari with capers, lemon and terrific olive oil.

Desserts? The thinnest lemon crepes; or something left-of-centre, like sfogliatella frolla, a pastry filled with semolina ricotta and candied fruits. The Grand has truly earned the plaudits of 'fun', 'satisfying' and 'utterly consistent'.”
